Mindset and Motivation: Feeling Stuck, Flat or Disconnected ⬇️
Motivation is not just about willpower or effort. Many people care deeply about their goals but still feel stuck, flat or disconnected when they try to act on them. You may know what you want to do and still find yourself postponing, avoiding or doing anything else instead.

Hypnotherapy for Low Motivation, Feeling Stuck and Lack of Follow Through in Colchester and Online
This page explores mindset and motivation in a clear, grounded way. Some of what you read may challenge the idea that you simply need more discipline or a stronger mindset. There is no pressure to agree with everything immediately. You can move through the page at your own pace.
Across thousands of hours of clinical work, many people have described the same pattern. They believed they were the problem, when in reality their system was overwhelmed, overprotective or running old patterns. Hypnotherapy helped them understand why they felt stuck and gave their mind a different way to respond.
Before we get into the depth and the detail, here's what I truly believe:-
You are not lazy.
You do not need a "kick up the backside" or "to pull your finger out"
Your system is blocked and that can be changed.
Start by understanding why your system feels this way
↓
Understanding Low Motivation ⬇️
Low motivation is usually a signal, not a character flaw. When your system is under pressure, stressed, overloaded or uncertain, motivation is often the first thing to disappear.
Understanding Low Motivation
Why hypnotherapy often works when nothing else does
Low motivation or procrastination happens when your system has been under pressure for longer than it can manage.
You might notice that you:
-
want to change, but cannot get started
-
feel flat when you think about your goals
-
get easily distracted when you sit down to focus
-
avoid important tasks even when they matter to you
-
feel blocked and cannot explain why
This is not because you do not care. It is because your internal resources are tied up in managing stress, emotion or uncertainty. Your system is busy trying to keep you safe.
This is a form of the Recurring Cycle. You see your patterns, promise to change, but end up in the same place. Hypnotherapy helps here because it works directly with the subconscious patterns and emotional responses that sit below your usual thinking.
Why Your System Blocks Action ⬇️
It often looks like you are procrastinating. Underneath, something else is happening. Your system is weighing up effort, risk, emotional cost and energy, usually outside of your awareness.
Why Your System Blocks Action
The Tower Block explained simply
To understand motivation, procrastination, and perhaps even feeling withdrawn and shutdown; it helps to have a simple way of visualising your internal state.
At The Mind Works we use the Tower Block, which is introduced in the Core Tools Starter course and explored further during hypnotherapy.
Imagine your emotional capacity as floors in a building:
-
Top floors: calm, clarity and emotional balance
-
Middle floors: coping, holding things together, managing
-
Lower floors: anxiety, panic, shutdown, exhaustion
It often looks like you are procrastinating. Underneath, something else is happening. Your system is weighing up effort, risk, emotional cost and energy, usually outside of your awareness.
Common internal signals include:
-
“If I start, I might fail.”
-
“If I try, it will be too much.”
-
“If I change, I might lose something I rely on.”
-
“If I slow down, everything will fall apart.”
When your system believes that action is unsafe, overwhelming or too costly, it will block you. It does this by creating hesitation, tiredness, distraction or discomfort whenever you move towards your goal.
Hypnotherapy for motivation helps your system feel safer about taking action. It reduces the emotional weight attached to starting and gives your mind a calmer internal signal when you move forward.
The Gears of Motivation ⬇️
At The Mind Works we often use the idea of Gears of Motivation to explain why your drive changes. Your motivation does not switch on and off by itself. It shifts depending on what your system is trying to do for you.
The Gears of Motivation
You can think of three broad gears:
-
Survival Gear
When you are tired, stressed or overwhelmed, your system focuses on getting through the day. Motivation for long term goals is very low here. Your brain is trying to keep you safe. -
Comfort Gear
When you have a little more capacity, your system looks for ways to reduce discomfort. You might choose familiar habits, easy tasks or short term relief instead of long term progress. -
Growth Gear
When you feel steady and resourced, you can think ahead and act on your goals. You can tolerate discomfort in the service of something that matters to you.
If you are stuck in Survival or Comfort Gear, it will feel almost impossible to act like you are in Growth Gear. Hypnotherapy helps you move into a steadier state so your system can shift up through the gears more easily.
The Psychological Story Behind Motivation ⬇️
Most people already notice that they can think or feel in different ways at the same time. You might say things like, “Part of me wants to do this, but another part just wants to avoid it,” or “I feel torn,” or “I know what to do, but I cannot make myself do it.”
The Psychological Story Behind Motivation
Parts of Self, emotional memory and learned beliefs
These are everyday descriptions of the Parts of Self.
At The Mind Works we use a simple model to explain this. Your mind is not one single voice. It is a collection of parts that learned different jobs at different points in your life.
-
One part wants progress, growth and change
-
One part wants comfort, ease and certainty
-
One part may simply be anxious, overwhelmed, or tired. Or it may be that there may something from a previous chapter in life that your mind is trying to protect you from
These parts often want different things at the same time. One part pushes you towards your goals. Another part pulls you back to keep you safe or avoid discomfort. None of these parts are bad. They are all trying to protect you in the way they learned earlier in life.
Some parts may even carry very subtle and subconscious messages like:
-
I will fail if I try
-
I am not capable
-
People will judge me if I get this wrong
-
If I stop, everything will fall apart
These were not chosen. They were formed under stress and they may still influence your decisions now.
Hypnotherapy works directly with these deeper patterns. It helps protective parts feel less threatened by change and allows the calmer, wiser part of you to take the lead. When your internal parts are less conflicted, motivation feels smoother and less effortful.
Why Discipline and Willpower Have Not Worked ⬇️
If you have tried to stay positive, push through or talk yourself out of how you feel and it still has not worked, there is a reason. This section explains why logic lives on the higher floors of the Tower Block and why you cannot access it when your system is overwhelmed, no matter how hard you try.
Why Discipline and Willpower Have Not Worked
Why hypnotherapy succeeds where thinking fails
You may have tried:
-
forcing routines
-
setting strict deadlines
-
using planners and productivity systems
-
telling yourself to “just get on with it”
-
waiting for motivation to arrive
-
shaming yourself when it did not
These strategies rely on the part of your mind that plans, reasons and decides. This part lives on the higher floors of the Tower Block. When you are tired, stressed or emotionally stretched, you drop to the lower floors and lose access to it.
No amount of self talk will work when your system feels overloaded or threatened. It is not that you have failed at discipline. It is that your system is not in a state where discipline can function.
You need stability before strategy.
Safety before action.
Calm before clarity.
Hypnotherapy for motivation becomes effective here because it works with the part of your mind that controls emotion, protection and reactivity, not just the part that sets goals.
How The Mind Works Helps
A whole system approach to hypnotherapy for emotional wellbeing
Our approach blends hypnotherapy, subconscious work, nervous system tools and psychology. It supports all three parts of that prevailing feeling that so many people describe to me - Anxious. Tired. Overwhelmed.
1. Stabilise your system
We begin by helping you recognise which “floor” of the Tower Block you are on and what gear your system is in. Regulation tools and hypnotherapy help your system settle so motivation can begin to return.
2. Calm the reactive mind
Hypnosis, breathwork and grounding reduce mental noise, overthinking and internal pressure. When the volume drops, it becomes easier to listen to what you actually want and need.
3. Understand emotional blocks
Using Parts of Self and the Map of the Subconscious, we explore why certain tasks or goals trigger resistance. This helps you see that your blocks are protective strategies, not personal failures.
4. Rebuild mental rhythm with DRF
We use the DRF framework to support motivation:
-
Direction
Your psychological direction. Understanding your internal parts, beliefs and values so you know where you are heading and why it matters. -
Rhythm
The daily patterns that support your mind. Small, repeatable actions and simple structures that your system can actually maintain. -
Fuel
The physical side. Sleep, rest, recovery and basic physiology that make clear thinking and consistent motivation possible.
When Direction, Rhythm and Fuel begin to line up, action feels more natural and less like a battle.
5. Build sustainable motivation
Using the Process of Change, we help you move from Recurring Cycle into a more stable pattern of Observing, Understanding, Managing and Overcoming. You learn how to work with your system rather than against it.
This is not about becoming a perfectly productive person.
It is about being able to move forward in a way that feels steady and humane.
